Course Description/content: This neonatology course is designed to prepare graduate midwives to be competently neonatal service providers. Upon completion of the course, asses and provide new born care and manage common neonatal problem.

Course Duration:  5weeks (189(40hr/wk=5wks)

Course Competency: Supportive Objectives

1.       Describe the characteristics of the normal newborn.

2.      Explain immediate assessment of the newborn.

3.      Describe the steps in newborn resuscitation.

4.      Discuss the role and responsibility of the midwife in relation to assessment of the baby at birth

5.      Provide immediate management for neonatal pathologic jaundice.

6.      Identify special problems of the preterm infant and complications that may occur.

7.      Summarize the respiratory & cardiovascular change that occurs during the transition to extra uterine life.

8.      Describe how various factors affect the newborn’s blood values.

9.      Correlate the major mechanism of heat loss in the newborn to the process of thermo genesis in the newborn

10.  Explain the steps involved in conjugation and excretion of bilirubin in the newborn

11.  Discuss the reasons why the newborn may develop jaundice

12.  Compare the problems of the post term infant to those of the preterm infant.

13.  Compare the causes, problems, nursing considerations of the large for

gestational age infant with those of small for gestational age infant.

14.  Correlate signs, symptoms of problems during the newborn period with Potential causes

15.  Analyze the Midwife role in maternal/newborn care, including professional competencies and standards of care.

16.  Apply the Midwifery care process to a plan of care for a high-risk neonate and family: preterm infant SGA, LGA, and pathologic jaundice.

17.  Describe how to facilitate correct position and attachment at the breast feeding
